20 years ago, these A-list stars burned the admissions building to the ground in 'Orange County.'
Even with Stanford’s rigorous admissions standards, a scheme that resorts to arson seems ill-advised … but it did work for Jack Black and Colin Hanks. The pair’s stop-at-nothing quest to get into the prestigious Bay Area university served as the pivotal conflict in the 2002 teen comedy “Orange County,” which turned 20 years old earlier this month.
If something has stuck in your memory of the film, it’s likely Black’s early-career performance, featuring his trademark off-the-wall humor. But the impressive, star-studded cast also features Lily Tomlin, Ben Stiller, Chevy Chase, Catherine O'Hara , John Lithgow, Lizzy Caplan and Harold Ramis . The movie was written by Mike White, who also wrote episodes of cult hit “Freaks and Geeks” and, more recently, created the HBO series “The White Lotus.
In the fall of 2002, Stanford admitted just 12.4% of applicants, a total of 2,320 students. You can understand how that competitiveness might call for desperate measures. And since that time, the rate of admissions has steadily decreased. For the fall of 2021, Stanford admitted just 3.95% of applicants, a record low. For comparison, UC Berkeley admits about 17%, USC about 16%, and Santa Clara University about 51% of applicants.
In “Orange County,” the stakes are equally high for Shaun. After the guidance counselor sends Stanford the wrong transcript , the school denies him admission. Shaun feels trapped by his hometown when faced with community college and life near his drug-addled brother, train wreck of a mother and inattentive father. Shaun's brother, Lance , tries to save the day by hatching a plan to drive to Stanford immediately, to explain the transcript mix-up to the dean of admissions.
