On the third anniversary of Michelle Go's tragic death, her father reflects on the enduring pain and pushes for increased mental health resources to prevent future tragedies.

Three years have passed since Michelle Go , a New York City businesswoman, was tragically killed after being pushed in front of an oncoming train in Times Square by a homeless man with schizophrenia. Her father, Justin Go, spoke with CBS News New York on the same day Governor Kathy Hochul delivered her State of the State speech, addressing subway safety concerns.

The incident occurred on January 15, 2022, when 40-year-old Michelle Go, a manager at Deloitte known for her dedication to helping at-risk and homeless families, became the victim of a senseless act. 'She worked with the homeless. There's the irony in that, about her being murdered by a homeless person,' Justin Go expressed. The pain of losing his daughter remains raw, even after three years. 'I'm not the same as I was before. Between times of depression, anger, anxiety,' he shared. The family, residing in California, traveled to New York City for a private prayer walk to honor Michelle's life and keep her memory alive.Justin Go fondly recalled his daughter's intelligence and infectious laughter. He vividly remembers the moment officers arrived at their home to deliver the devastating news. 'We were just totally floored,' Go said. 'We became what I call the other people that you always read about and say, well, I'm glad that didn't happen to me.' The Go family's tragedy is unfortunately not unique. New York City's latest crime statistics reveal a disturbing trend: 29 people were pushed onto subway tracks in 2022, followed by 17 in 2023 and 26 in 2024. Just recently, on New Year's Eve, another man was shoved in front of a subway in Chelsea. During her State of the State address, Governor Hochul outlined subway safety initiatives, including expanding involuntary commitment, increasing police presence and barriers, and installing LED lights at all subway stations. 'More police where they are needed, safety infrastructure and critical interventions to help the homeless and mentally ill get the help they need, instead of languishing on trains and frightening fellow commuters,' Hochul stated. While Justin Go acknowledges these steps as a positive direction, he continues to advocate for the Michelle Go Act, a bipartisan bill introduced in 2022 that aims to double psychiatric hospital beds accessible to Medicaid patients. 'It's not going to bring Michelle back,' Go said. 'And of course, it will hopefully increase the health, safety and welfare of other New Yorkers here.'
