Dr. Richard Cash devoted much of his life to improving health care in poor countries. He played a critical role in the testing and implementation of oral rehydration therapy for patients suffering from diarrheal diseases — giving them a mixture of water, salts and sugar. Working with others at the Cholera Research Laboratory, Cash conducted field studies proving that oral rehydration therapy is effective; a study conducted years later showed an estimated effectiveness rate of 93%.ran a story about his work. The ethics of global health policies became a passion. He taught and wrote about the need to focus on acceptable and affordable solutions to difficult global health problems such as COVID. In a paper ina few months into the pandemic, he bemoaned the focus on rich country approaches such as lockdowns and sophisticated hospital treatment that wouldn’t be feasible in poor countries.

Cash remained single until the age of 60, when he married writer, businesswoman and yoga instructor Stella Dupuis, whom he met at an ayurvedic spa in Kerala, India.
