Remembering a strange Gavin Newsom Fleet Week feud

The feud happened 15 years ago, but if you change a couple of details here and there, the tale very much sounds like it could have happened in 2022.

Daly, alongside anti-war groups, tried repeatedly to ban the Blue Angels from participating in 2007’s Fleet Week. Newsom did not support the ban, and his then-spokesperson Nathan Ballard made pithy statements directed at Daly.

“We think that the FAA is better qualified to decide the Blue Angels’ flight path than Chris Daly is,”Daly’s moves ultimately went nowhere: The board’s Government Audit and Oversight Committee killed the ban proposal in August 2007, and Daly’s September follow-up attempt to force a vote on the measure was blocked by former Supervisor Sean Elsbernd, who is now chief of staff to Mayor London Breed.

Even though Daly had minimal support from other elected officials, it didn’t stop national conservative blogs from writing stories on the latest travails of woke San Francisco, long before the word “woke” entered our political lexicon.
