The remains of a missing U.S. soldier have been recovered in the Atlantic Ocean, the army announced on Sunday.

The remains of a missing U.S. soldier have been recovered in the Atlantic Ocean, the army announced on Sunday, as military teams continue the search for a second missing soldier. The 27-year-old 14A Air Defense Artillery officer was one of two soldiers who fell from a cliff during a recreational hike while off duty. Officials said the pair went missing around 9 p.m. near the Cap Draa Training Area outside of Tan-Tan.
They described the terrain as mountains, desert and semidesert plains. Both soldiers were participating in African Lion, which is an annual multinational military exercise in the country.

The contingent will provide command and control, the defense official told the outlet. Key Jr. is from Richmond, Virginia and was assigned to Charlie Battery, 5th Battalion, 4th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command. The exercise involved over 7,000 personnel from over 30 nations and is considered the largest U.S. joint military exercise in Africa since 2004.
“The capstone combined field exercise showcased the future of warfare through multi-domain vignettes, including defense in depth, deep strike operations, and a coordinated counterattack,” U.S. Army Sgt. Maj. Patrick Jeffrey, G7 Directorate sergeant major, SETAF-AF, said in a statement.
