Renowned psychotherapist Esther Perel argues that a growing emphasis on self-care and authenticity is leading young people to avoid forming meaningful relationships, resulting in increased loneliness. She believes that the modern aversion to conflict and friction hinders relationship building and fosters isolation.

Only 32% of young people say they have more than 5 close friends: It's the No. 1 reason they're unhappy, therapist says, which ranks 143 countries across measures of life satisfaction, the United States came in at No. 23. This is the first time in the report's 20-year history the U.S. has not ranked in the top 20.

"I think people are more lonely because they are less adept at being in relationships as that involves conflict, friction and differences," she says."An enormous amount of people are cutting off friends and family members like never before."Perel believes young Americans' emphasis on being their most authentic selves comes at the expense of forming connections.

"Therapy speak of a certain kind has the word 'self' in front of everything — self-awareness, self-realization, self-fulfillment, self-care, self-image," Perel says.
