Since cofounding March for Our Lives, David Hogg has been working steadily to turn outrage into organization and influence.

Hi everyone and thank you so much DavidYou have been doing so much over the last couple of years.you co-founded March For Our LivesWith your classmates, you organized marches, over 300 gun safety laws around the country.

We don't talk about that enough.you co-founded Leaders We Deserve,to help elect the next generation of young leadersof the Democratic National Committee,to help elect Democrats up and down ballots. So we're officially one year out from midterms.Big question.one of the reasons why I decided to start ita lot of Cold War history.where one leader after another after anotherit's not an identical situation by any means.that has been powered by a boomer electoratein power and been there, in my opinion, for far too long.let me be clear.that isn't just younger versionsespecially within the Democratic partyAnd what we wanna do at Leaders We DeserveWe wanna elect younger peopleand ensure that they don't take money from corporations, their constituents and not special interestsduring school shooter drills,But when we see somebody out there like Zohran, right?talking about our endorsement of him,When we were in Washington Square Park, and there was a group of teenagers that mobbed Zohran.but they were literally recitingit is really hard to make them care about anything.I think that is the most important thingit's about defeating Republicans, because we aren't as bad as them,if that makes sense. How are they doing?with our closest friends here. Absolutely. They're gonna get primary.the Chuck Schumers of the world understand this.I think that if they think that there's gonna bethat are younger and like super pissed offI think the group that is most out of touchI think it's people like Chuck SchumerIt's because the people that are marchingThey are people of Chuck Schumer's generationhappening right now where there's a lot of energylike after Zohran got elected, over at Run For Something.and these young people stepping up at the same timeLet's be blunt here, critics think thatIt's an interesting characterizationI think it says a lot more about their sense of entitlementWe're not only challenging people in primaries, who's running in California's 22nd congressional districthe's running against an older democrat named Steve Cohen.with Justin Pearson to, and I am not kidding, Pearl Harbor,And my message to people like Steve Cohen is,that's their decision to make, not yours.to challenge people and actually embrace the democracyto improve ourselves, I don't think thatlike new blood is good,And I have to wonder if you're thinking about thisI have to imagine that Republicans right nowWell I think they got their own problemsstarting to kind of self-emulate with what we just sawthe first spark in that wildfire they're about to deal with.do we want Republicans to win the majority, obviously.Just because I may not agree with a Marie Perez,in a seat that Trump won by, I think it was six, seven,as much as I may disagree with her.even though, you know, we don't agree with her.that practically stand zero chance of actually flipping'cause obviously I want us to have the majority too.a very active role in campaigns with Leaders We Deserve,You guys gave Zohran Mamdani $300,000, is that right? Important legal distinction, of course. And part of what we did there is we asked other peopleget him across the finish line.what's most important to you in a candidate?sending a clear message to voterswho are willing to stand up against special interests.I know that's a crazy premise.what we're doing is so important, is last election cycle, well why did we lose the electionAnd it was remarkable seeing the amount of sidesteppingIt's like, give me a goddamn break. And the truth of matter is, more than anything,Look at the GDP and the S&PAnd then when they told us that Joe Biden is too old,And here's a billion dollars to make you forget that in ads.And thankfully what we just saw in this last electionin the last election, obviously in 2025,is necessarily that every candidate is gonna be ZohranI think we need to run candidates where they can winBut what that does mean is that if you're Chuck Schumerand we need to vote blue no matter who,And if you're only supporting one side, and tell me that we just need to vote for the DemocratAnd let's talk about that for a second.is that I think what we saw in this past election in '25And Democrats have the opportunity to offer that to themon how we're not taking money from private utility companiesNobody really talks about that,But if we can send a clear message to votersand we're here to actually make things less expensiveand bring in fresh faces and new blood into our partyin the way that Zohran did,Let's rewind for a second Depends on who you ask.A candidate who's fresh and interesting,You made some enemies bringing up some of these thingsDon't run someone who can't string sentences togetherThat was a really brief role for youCan you talk to us a little bit about what happened there?but I don't wanna bore you guys.and what the direction that Ken MartinI knew I was running Leaders We Deserve.I read the bylaws of the DNC and it didn't say thatwhich makes sense 'cause that is a role that the DNC has.who were just there previouslyincluding obviously incumbents that have primaries.there was a fundamental difference in opinionand completely stay out of it, and-that they were upset that you were primarying Democrats.Oh, we just don't wanna have people involved in primariesand what I said was, look, I understandBut what I also don't agree with is setting the precedentmyself in this case, being outside of those laws.that says this will start after the termor I guess they wouldn't say that they decided, where they had to redo the election.and I would not seek reelection in that positionThat were, again, obviously about primarying Democrats. Is there any part of you here that thinksyou could have changed it from within?I think that there are far too many, and this is not, about young people now too.generationally speaking, right?and you know, I've seen this in myself in the past too,You don't get it and just say all the reasonsThe hard thing is making those institutions actually work,And when I was at my first DNC meetingI wanted to see how things were being run.in the Democratic Party, just nonstop.and it was the first one that they had after the election. That was the question they're trying to answer.when it comes to why we lost the electiona single goddamn person under the age of 40.for me to actually try to fix this myselffor at least one member of our generation, and say, actually, yes, TikTok does connect to the internet,to be that change and I don't regret it.that just wanna sit on the sidelines and complainof trying to make an institution better.is we have to understand how it works on the inside, not to seek reelection is somebody tweeted at melike why don't you just run for like a local party officeBecause they didn't understandYou're sitting at this table.Let's skip ahead from midterms. What cycle are we talking, like 2040You know, I think that we need to haveto talk about this now that I'm not, you know,a ruthlessly competitive primary as much as possible.that they think is the best 'cause I think thatAnd then I also wanna see progressives run somebody,I would love if she could get elected to that position.oh yes, I have all the answers.in where the party should go rests in our primaries.to Republicans basically in any way, shape, or formthat they feel like they can actually be represented by,a bunch of special interests.and really hold people's feet to the fireand things like Israel that they do not want to talk about.Because what's not gonna actually help create more peaceor that voters don't care about this.as you have said, issues that people don't wanna talk abouta bit of a bogeyman for the right as well. How is it to be beloved by both parties?that are criticizing me the most.a lot of threats for your work.and putting this all out there?I know that I am obviously a lightning rodbut actually meaningfully use that powerwhere people are actually representedis because when I was in college, I had to hire somebodyAnd I called up my friend MaxwellAnd I remember calling him from my freshman dorm roomon a full immersion Spanish test that I hadI really need to pass this Spanish classAnd a few years later he calls me up and he tells me,The bad news is I'm leaving March For Our Lives.I'm running for Congress. He said, Yes, I know, thankfully I'm better at mathI was like, Well, I've never supported anybodybut I saw him as a friend.were former Democratic members of Congress, was a hedge fund manager while they were in Congress.
