MotoGP champion Jorge Martin suffers fractures to his hand and foot after a highside crash during preseason testing in Malaysia. Surgery is scheduled, raising concerns about his ability to defend his title.
Reigning MotoGP champion Jorge Martin suffered fractures to his hand and foot after a serious crash during preseason testing in Sepang, Malaysia on Wednesday. The incident occurred in Turn 2 when Martin lost control of his bike, resulting in a highside that sent him flying. He landed hard on the tarmac, striking the ground face-first and shattering his helmet.
The session was temporarily halted as Martin was transported to the medical center by ambulance and subsequently moved to the hospital for further evaluation. He is currently undergoing tests due to pain in his left foot and right hand.A statement from MotoGP confirmed Martin's injuries, stating that he has been diagnosed with a right hand fracture and fractures in his left foot. He has undergone both a CT scan and an MRI, which revealed no other significant injuries. Martin will remain in the hospital overnight and is scheduled to fly back to Europe tomorrow to undergo surgery on both his injured hand and foot. This unfortunate incident casts uncertainty over Martin's title defense for the upcoming season. Martin secured his first MotoGP championship in dramatic fashion at the final race of the 2024 season, preventing Francesco Bagnaia of Ducati from claiming a third consecutive title. He now faces a three-week recovery period before the inaugural Grand Prix of the season, scheduled for February 28th at Thailand's Chang International Circuit. Earlier in the testing session, Trackhouse Racing's Raul Fernandez was also forced to withdraw after sustaining hand and foot fractures. Trackhouse Racing also utilizes Aprilia bikes.
