Liberal members have begun discussing who should throw their hat into the ring to contest the Melbourne seat of Goldstein at the next federal election as the Anzac event controversy raged on.

RSL Victoria says the wreath-laying dispute involving former Liberal MP Tim Wilson and a stand-in for Zoe Daniel – the independent who beat him at last year’s election – was regrettable but won’t overshadow the solemn Anzac event.

Asked why he didn’t let go of the wreath once the sitting MP’s stand-in came forward, Wilson said: “I laid the wreath in the spirit of our community to honour our fallen heroes.” A spokeswoman for RSL Victoria said in a statement: “Events at … [the] commemorative service were regrettable and didn’t overshadow the importance of Anzac Day.”

“The MC called for a volunteer,” he said. “There was an embarrassing pause which highlighted Zoe Daniel’s absence. Tim was reluctant at first. I disagree with Tim Wilson on a lot of policies … but he didn’t do it to grandstand himself.” “[This situation] was catastrophic, just catastrophic,” one Liberal member said on the condition of anonymity to freely discuss internal matters. “It was mind-bogglingly bad.”One of the names being touted as a potential candidate for the Goldstein preselection is James Newbury, the Liberal member for the state seat of Brighton, according to a well-placed source speaking on the condition of anonymity. Newbury did not respond to calls for comment.
