Regina King talks with Newsweek about the 15-year journey to get Shirley Chisholm's story made in Netflix's 'Shirley.'
'We all assume that just by the way carried herself that this is a 'strong woman,' but there's a lot that comes with being a strong human being.' Bringing the life story of activist Shirley Chisholm to screen wasn't an easy task for Regina King. 'This has been a labor of love. My sister and I have been at this for close to 15 years now.
And I just really hope that one of the things that people take away is the humanity of Shirley. That she's just not this cyborg that knows how to speak really loud and isn't afraid to stand up to people, but that this is a woman who goes home and she is tired and her shoulders do drop. Then hopefully people can relate to that.The other interesting thing about this is how it's often presented.
