Nearly five weeks after 39 suspected asylum seekers were found in Beagle Bay, advocates have been communicating with the men on Nauru.
Asylum seekers advocates say they have made contact with a group of men who allegedly arrived by boat to the Kimberley coast.
After weeks of trying to reach the men, the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre said it was relieved to receive contact from all 39 on March 11, confirming they were still being held in detention on Nauru.centre of a political football focused on Australia's border protection policies.Australians saw a Nauru Airlines plane come and go from the Kimberley region and heard from authorities that the situation had been "dealt with.
"We're still calling on the government to dismantle the wall of secrecy that has shrouded what's been happening on Nauru … over the past 10 years," Ms Favero said.Ms Favero said it was no surprise to hear concerns from community members who saw the men because it puts a human face to Australia's tough border controls."When people actually meet someone seeking asylum, the first thing they say is, 'They're just people like us'," she said.
"Australia’s policy response remains consistent: Unauthorised maritime arrivals will not settle in Australia," the spokesperson said.The ABC was told the cohort of foreign nationals would remain in Nauru until their migration status was resolved or until they voluntarily departed.
