In all likelihood, last week’s loss to the Steelers will stand as the final time Derek Carr suits up in a Raiders jersey. Carr may be the fall guy now, but starting in 2023, that’s over. For tashanreed, the pressure now shifts to the Raiders' brass:

will stand as the final time Carr suited up in a Raiders jersey. The Raiders’ decision-makers will be adamant that this isn’t a declaration about their plans for next season — McDaniels said there was “no finality” about what they plan to do with Carr — but those are empty words. The only reason to do this is if the intention is to move on from Carr after this season.

There are plenty of reasons that justify reaching that decision. Carr just didn’t play well enough this season, full stop. He’s thrown for 3,522 yards and 24 touchdowns , but completed just 60.8 percent of his passes , averaged only 7.0 yards per attempt , threw 14 interceptions and fell short in several late-game moments that could’ve helped the Raiders avoid being 6-9 and sitting on the verge of being eliminated from the playoffs.

“We’re all accountable, and it starts with me,” McDaniels said. “He’s been accountable all year, and I know he’ll continue to do that. That’s the kind of person and teammate he is. So I don’t think anybody feels like we’ve done enough.”On a macro scale, Carr has played a hand in the Raiders finishing with a losing record in all but two of his nine seasons as the starting quarterback. That track record, his current level of play and his $32.9 million salary next season — which jumps to $41.

The Raiders could still trade Carr after that date passes. But if no trade is agreed to before Feb. 15, it would shift almost all of the leverage into Carr’s hands. He has a no-trade clause, so he’ll be able to dictate any negotiations on that front, anyway, but he could then theoretically block a trade altogether and force the Raiders to keep him in 2023. If they aren’t certain they can find a trade destination that Carr will approve before the $40.

It’s also possible that Carr could decide to retire — he’s indicated in the past that he would step away from the game rather than play somewhere else — but the most likely outcome feels like the Raiders and Carr coming to an agreement on a trade destination. That would be the most beneficial route for the Raiders, obviously, since it would allow them to recoup some assets for a quarterback who should still draw multiple suitors despite his lackluster play this season.
