Redwood City Port officials are seeking to expand amid a growth in visitors, with plans to build a restaurant and museum for Peninsula families.
REDWOOD CITY — Longtime Peninsula residents will remember the hustle and bustle that used to be the Port of Redwood City in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s.
Since the start of the pandemic, however, the port has been revitalized as a destination for families and others who come to enjoy bay views, laugh along with the Zoppe Italian Family Circus, watch drive-in movies or buy fresh fish from the Pioneer fishing trawler. “We’re throwing out broad ideas right now,” Zortman said. “We’ve been researching how we are able to offer other kinds of uses here at the port that really brings our community here and provides unique benefits.”
Zortman said she’s confident the population and economic growth of Silicon Valley could easily support a restaurant by the water in Redwood City, a prime location for South Bay diners who don’t want to make the trek to Santa Cruz for fish and chips with ocean views. Along with a restaurant, the port hopes to showcase its history and natural assets to the general public in a new state-of-the-art facility by the water where people can learn about San Francisco Bay.
Executive Director Marilou Seiff said the institute contracted the San Francisco-based architecture firm EHDD to come up with concepts for a new museum that blends outdoor with indoor and would include space for exhibits, an aquarium, docks and parkland for visitors.
