A Redmond High School counselor has been arrested for allegedly having an inappropriate relationship with a student.
A Redmond High School counselor has been arrested for allegedly having an inappropriate relationship with a student, the Redmond Police Department 35-year-old Derik Detweiler, of Kenmore, was taken into custody without incident in Cody, Wyoming, on Thursday. Detweiler will remain in custody until he is extradited back to Washington.
“We are thankful to the student for having the courage to come forward, as this relationship likely would have continued,” Redmond Police Chief Darrell Lowe said. “We encourage parents to have conversations with their children that if they hear or see something concerning, they should tell a trusted adult immediately. We also remind parents to monitor their children’s social media activity and report anything suspicious.
“Detweiler’s overbearing affection for the student became too much. At one point Detweiler gave the student a key to his apartment as a gift," court documents state. According to court documents, the communication between the two started on March 29 and continued until the student blocked Detweiler on May 22 and reported the relationship to school officials.
