Layoff notices have been sent out in the Redlands Unified School District — impacting positions like librarians, special education staff and nurses — with school officials saying it's a result of financial pressure. The Redlands Unified school board approved 19 layoffs on Tuesday. The board said these decisions are never easy but that they're needed as it continues to restructure and deal with enrollment trends and budget issues.
Donna Elliot is a school nurse and has been with the district for more than 10 years, most recently at Cope Middle School, where she helps students with a variety of health-related needs.
"Dealing with diabetics and treating them prior to their lunch break," she said. "There are a lot of things that happen on a day-to-day basis that having somebody, me — being an actual nurse and on site — is a benefit. " Elliot is now among the growing list of nurses, librarians and special ed staff on the cutting block.by the school board, impacting positions from counselors to an assistant principal.

"The district has been running a structural deficit, but they have known about it for years," Stephen Caperton, president of the Redlands Teacher Association, said. "They've had opportunities to do early retirement programs, which was two years ago, but they kept hiring people. " Superintendent Juan Cabral was not available to speak to NBCLA on Wednesday but issued the following statement: “These decisions were made after careful consideration of the District’s long-term financial responsibilities and operational needs.
While difficult, our goal is to ensure we remain fiscally stable while continuing to support students and maintain essential educational services across the district. ” For employees like Elliott, getting a layoff notice weeks before the end of the school year is tough.
"I'm thankfully a nurse, but it puts me out there. I'm 58 years old and starting over," Elliott said. "That's not going to be an easy task. "
