A physical education teacher at Redland Middle School in Alabama is being hailed as a hero after he quickly acted to save a student's life during a medical emergency. Coach Jayson Hall and the school nurse used CPR and an AED on seventh-grader Colton Cramer, who collapsed in class. Hall's quick thinking and decisive actions were crucial in ensuring Cramer received immediate medical attention and survived the ordeal.
It was a tough start to the new year at Redland Middle School . The students had just returned to school after winter break on January 7 when seventh-grader Colton Cramer suffered a medical emergency during physical education class. Physical education teacher and coach Jayson Hall and the school’s nurse, Kristen Wright, quickly jumped in to help, performing CPR and using an automated external defibrillator on Colton.
He was eventually flown to Children’s Hospital in Birmingham, where he is still recovering.Hall remembers the entire day vividly and recalls performing CPR on Colton. He said he loves his students like they’re his own, and it’s a day he will never forget. “Thankfully things worked out great, and I’m hearing great news that everything’s going to be just fine,” he said. “God was with us that day and I’m thankful for that.” Hall has been teaching for 23 years and was born and raised in Wetumpka. Over the years, he’s worked at both Redland Elementary School and Redland Middle School. He said he’s had the opportunity to watch this group of kids grow up. “I know Colton,” he said. “I know most of these kids. Most of them I’ve had since they were 5 years old, so there’s a lot of personal relationships.” According to the school’s principal, Colton is slowly improving and is expected to return to school soon. As for the physical education coach - and now hero - Hall said he will continue to show up for his students and work what he calls his “dream job” of coaching and supporting kids. “What a great job I have. I get to show up every day, work with kids and focus on students and sports all day long,” he said. “I just love this area, and I love what I do.”
