RALPH RUSSO, AP’s lead CFB writer, manager of the AP Top 25 poll
Our AP Top 25 poll returns Monday, Aug. 14 at 12 p.m. ET, and as we like to think of it, we’ve now entered the unofficial start of the college football season. The poll sets the tone and storylines for the three awesome months to come. I have chronicled the sport during a historic period of change, from the BCS transforming into the College Football Playoff, to sweeping conference realignment, to players now being able to earn money off their fame. I have covered every national championship since 2004, helped tell the story of Nick Saban's Alabama dynasty and written a story about the last 19 Heisman Trophy winners. I've detailed the rise of Johnny Football and the demise of Joe Paterno.
I’m here to answer any questions on how the poll works, how it’s evolved over time and the details that come with keeping it one of the most closely watched barometers in the sport — and, of course, our preseason rankings. Fun fact: The AP preseason poll started in 1950. Since then, only 11 times has the team that started No. 1 won a national championship.
