“Redaction” didn’t always mean obscuring sensitive text. The word has a long history and so does the practice it describes.

The public release of special counsel Robert Mueller’s report in redacted form—with small and large blocked-out sections across its more than 400 pages—has many people wondering what “redacted” actually means.

When Attorney General William Barr first announced the release plan last month, Merriam-Webster saw a 40-fold spike in lookups to its online dictionary for the words “redact” and “redacted.” This morning that spiked again—to more than 90-fold.
