The “red wave” that Republicans predicted and worked for never materialized. Democrats won’t emerge unscathed but, given the soaring inflation and the president’s anemic approval, history suggested this would be a bloodbath for the party in the White House.Republicans are still likely to flip control of the U.S. House. They’ll likely pick up eight to 15 seats – well short of protections. That’s enough to erase the Democrats’ slim 5-seat majority, but a huge disappointment.
The president was hardly ubiquitous on the stump. But it turned out he wasn’t nearly the albatross Republicans had counted on, despite approval ratings mired in the low 40s. Former President Donald Trump embraces Arizona Republican candidate for governor Kari Lake at a "Save America" rally July 22, 2022, in Prescott Valley, Ariz.
But Trump’s picks in Pennsylvania both fell short: Dr. Oz and gubernatorial nominee Doug Mastriano, a state senator who promoted Trump’s denial of the 2020 election results. In Florida, GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis, derided by Trump last week as “Ron De-sanctimonious,” easily coasted to another term. DeSantis has been the strongest alternative to Trump in the 2024 for months, by far – hence the nasty nickname.
A GOP sweep in the three districts would have demoralized Democrats nationwide and rewritten the playbook on how the parties relate to Hispanic voters.“They spent over $7 million against us, spewing lies and hate and disinformation,” Rep. Vicente Gonzalez, D-McAllen,. “Even with these large investments, we showed the Republican Party that South Texas is not their home.”
