Jason Varitek, who serves as game planning coordinator/catching instructor for the Red Sox, has drawn the interest of the San Francisco Giants, who want to interview him for their managerial vacancy. Could Jason Varitek soon be leaving the Boston Red Sox, the only organization he’s ever known in his accomplished MLB career?
It appears the first step in that process will be completed within days: He will interview with the San Francisco Giants for their manager position,Varitek, the 15-year Red Sox catcher and former team leader, has spent his post-playing career that ended in 2011 with the Red Sox in front office and coaching roles, most recently as the team’s player information coach, a position he’s held for the past two seasons.
The Post reported an informational phone call to replace former manager Gabe Kapler is expected to be conducted in the next few days.Yankees fans remember Varitek as a staple on the hated Red Sox teams from 1998-2011 who won two World Series — and ignited awith Alex Rodriguez in 2004 after A-Rod was hit by a pitch. Both players received four-game suspensions and fines, and they have not spoken to each other since that July 24 night, according to reports.
“What that position holds, yeah, everybody I think has aspirations to keep moving forward,” Varitek said. “I enjoy the heck out of what I’m doing now. Does that cut off my ceiling?
