The Boston Red Sox have joined the race to sign free agent slugger Pete Alonso, adding another contender to the mix. While the New York Mets remain the favorites, Alonso's market is becoming clearer with several teams expressing interest.
The New York Mets are the favorites to sign free-agent slugger Pete Alonso this winter. Alonso is reportedly looking for a contract well north of $150 million, but it's unclear if any team will give that to him. At this point, his market is becoming much clearer, though there are more teams in the race than many believed. According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, there are eight teams in the Alonso sweepstakes with the Boston Red Sox emerging from the shadows as a potential suitor.
'There currently are eight teams showing at least some interest in Alonso, including the Toronto Blue Jays and Boston Red Sox,' Nightengale wrote. 'But in the game of first base musical chairs where 11 teams have a new first baseman, Alonso is still left standing. He may have no choice but to return to the Mets on a short-term deal with an opt-out.' If we've learned anything this winter, it's that nobody truly knows where a free agent is going to sign except for the free agent himself. There was almost zero insider connection indicating Corbin Burnes would sign with the Arizona Diamondbacks before he did so. The same thing could happen with Alonso. With the Red Sox emerging as a suitor this late in the race, it's not the same as Burnes shocking the baseball world by signing with Arizona, but it's similar. Boston has been connected to Nolan Arenado and Alex Bregman in an attempt to slide Rafael Devers over to first base. With that in mind, the Red Sox could pursue Alonso, leave Devers at third base, and rotate the Polar Bear and Triston Casas at first base and designated hitter.
