The Yankees had promoted Lawson from their own minor league system to become their hitting coach entering the 2022 season. They ranked second in runs per game in Lawson’s first year, thanks in large part to Aaron Judge’s record-breaking 62 homer season. But the Yankees struggled in the first half of 2023, which led to Brian Cashman citing the need for a new voice and making Lawson his first in-season coaching dismissal during his long tenure in The Bronx.Sean Casey replaced Lawson as hitting coach when the Yankees came out of the All-Star break before James Rowson took over in the offseason.
