I’ve been writing about video games, television and movies for Forbes for over 10 years, and you may have seen my reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic. I cover all manner of console and PC games, but if it’s about looting or shooting, I’m definitely there. If I’m watching something, it’s usually science fiction, horror or superheroic.
It has been easy to dunk on Red One, a very goofy-looking Christmas movie starring The Rock and Chris Evans, but the internet, and professional critics, do not always translate into what real-world audiences may think. And for Red One, that appears to be a good thing for the film.from 124 critics.
This reminds me of another “Red” movie starring The Rock, Red Notice, starring him, Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot, a pricey Netflix blockbuster. That too was savaged by critics, a 37%, but had a 92% audience score, a near identical split for what we’re seeing here. Even Black Adam, 39% from critics and 88% from audiences.
The Rock clearly pulls his weight when it comes to pleasing audiences, but a more general Hollywood problem of budgeting means that it may be harder and harder to turn big profits with movies like this, even if they would be normally performing well in a vacuum. It’s too early to say how Red One will do over the long term, but that budget is a steep hill to climb.Our community is about connecting people through open and thoughtful conversations.
