Having been given an uncomfortable release between the Presidential election and the one-two punch of Wicked and Gladiator II, Amazon MGM’s Christmas-themed action-adventure film Red One really didn’t stand a chance at the box office. Although the movie showed some signs of life this past weekend, delivering a respectable hold over the extended Thanksgiving period, it was too little too late.
✕ Remove Ads With $77 million domestically and another $73 million from overseas markets, the movie has made a cumulative global total of $150 million. This isn’t a lot, especially considering its hefty reported budget of around $250 million. At this stage, Red One only has an outside chance of passing the $100 million mark domestically and the $200 million mark worldwide. Even if it does, these will be cosmetic accomplishments at best.
That being said, it certainly put stars Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans’ box office pull to the test, and didn’t exactly pass with flying colors. Even though Johnson saved face thanks to his above-the-title participation in this week’s Moana 2 — the animated hit delivered the biggest Thanksgiving debut of all time — he’s currently in the middle of a particularly difficult phase in his career. Johnson’s live-action films, particularly the ones designed as vehicles for him, haven’t been doing well.
✕ Remove Ads 'Red One' Earned Unenthusiastic Reviews, But Positive Audience Response Close Evans, on the other hand, has appeared in three streaming releases — The Gray Man, Ghosted, and Pain Hustlers — in addition to playing a cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine. Directed by Jake Kasdan, who worked with Johnson on two of his biggest hits — Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and its sequel, Jumanji: The Next Level — Red Oneopened to poor reviews.
