South Alabama is facing a high risk of wildfires on Saturday, as dry conditions persist, winds gusts increase and humidity remains low. The National Weather Service issued a red flag warning, which is in effect from 11 a.
m. - 7 p.m. on Saturday. Hundreds of volunteer fire fighters throughout Mobile County are bracing for what could be a busy and dangerous weekend. Fire chiefs say conditions are primed for flames to spread quickly, and warn it won't take much to spark a wild fire. "A cigarette being thrown out your vehicle can start a 2-acre fire," said Seven Hills Volunteer Fire Chief Matt Waltman. Grand Bay Volunteer Fire Chief Richie Dodge says his department had to respond to a brush fire this week after embers from a burn pit were carried by the wind.A large brush fire threatened Waterville in Gulf Shores on Tuesday before crews were able to contain it.Waltman says they've responded to small grass fires this week. He says ahead of Saturday's elevated threat, he's checking to see which of his two dozen volunteers will be able to answer the call, and he's making sure all their equipment is ready to go. "A weekend like this weekend, definitely the potential and the higher hazards are there. So everybody's going to be on a greater alert readiness," said Waltman."These wildfires, sometimes they're so unpredictable, especially with the winds they're calling for," said Dodge."It carries water for wildfire suppression, you know, somewhere where a normal truck can't go. This can go," said Dodge."It's really important having good relationships with those neighboring departments, because we do end up mutual aiding a lot of times with each other," said Waltman.Dodge is the president of the county association of volunteer fire departments and estimates at least 250 volunteer fire fighters work for the 15 fully volunteer departments in Mobile County.
