Red Dragon is a prequel to The Silence Of The Lambs, but its attempt to link the two movies together during the ending creates an odd plot hole.
The ending of Hannibal Lecter prequel Red Dragon's leads directly into The Silence Of The Lambs, creating a strange plot hole in the process. Viewers had to wait a decade for Anthony Hopkins to return to his Oscar-winning role in 2001's Hannibal, but producers weren't going to wait another ten years for the next entry.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Hopkins eventually signed up for Red Dragon, which marked his final appearance in the role. One issue with Red Dragon is that it's set in the 1980s, with Hopkins essentially playing a version of Hannibal who is supposed to be 20 years younger than the one seen in Ridley Scott's Hannibal movie.
The bulk of Red Dragon takes place in 1986, while Silence Of The Lambs is set in 1990. The prequel's ending doesn't give a timeline for how long after Will's attack it takes place, but it's implied to be a few months at most. Having Clarice visit Hannibal so soon after The Tooth Fairy case doesn't work in that case, and it seems the filmmakers just fudged the time frame for the sake of adding a cute wink to the audience.
How Red Dragon's Ending Can Make Sense With Silence Of The Lambs There are a few ways Red Dragon's ending can still align with its Silence Of The Lambs teaser. Either Hannibal suddenly decided to write Will a letter four years after his attack, or he just happens to be thinking about his old enemy at that moment, and pictured Will on his boat with his family.
