Every now and then, Rockstar Games reminds us it hasn't forgotten that Red Dead Redemption 2 exists. A recent reference to the critically acclaimed Western was spotted inside the latest update for GTA Online.

While the original Red Dead Redemption was recently re-released for consoles and mobile devices, what the fans really crave is a next-gen update for Red Dead Redemption 2. It's an already gorgeous game — arguably better looking than most games released today — but a 60fps upgrade would go a long way. While this recent discovery probably isn't a hint of anything more to come, it's a fun nod to a classic. Red Dead Redemption 2 Officially Referenced In New GTA Online Update A very familiar sight As spotted by Rockstarintel, GTA Online's brand-new A Safehouse In The Hills expansion is hiding at least one reference to Red Dead Redemption 2. The big new feature of this latest expansion — which brings back GTA 5 protagonist Michael — is the ability to purchase luxury homes and decorate them as you see fit. Among these customization options there are various paintings that can be hung throughout your new mansion, and as is typical of Rockstar's attention to detail, each painting has the name of a fictional artist. One piece in particular is called The Shade, and is credited to an artist called C. Châtenay. In Red Dead Redemption 2, Charles Châtenay is a French painter that you can meet as part of a mission called"The Artist’s Way". A fun reference, to be sure. Rockstarintel also pointed out this same painting can be found in the Braithwaite Manor in Red Dead Redemption 2. You know, before you burn the place to the ground. This is hardly the first time a Red Dead Redemption reference has been spotted in GTA 5 or GTA Online, of course. There's a book called Red Dead by a man called J. Marston, and various street names in the desert town of Sandy Shores are named after Red Dead Redemption locations. Could We See Further Red Dead Redemption 2 Updates Soon? We can't rule it out As I say, it's unlikely this one small reference means anything more. But it is worth pointing out that multiple leakers and insiders have suggested that Red Dead Redemption 2 is getting an update sooner rather than later. Earlier this month, Nate the Hate reiterated that the upgrade is coming and that Red Dead Redemption 1's next-gen release doesn't change that. It's certainly a more interesting time to be a Red Dead Redemption fan right now, with massive upgrades to the original and a seemingly inevitable update for Red Dead Redemption 2 before GTA 6, to say nothing of the lasting potential of a Red Dead Redemption 3 announcement somewhere down the road. 10 10/10 9/10 Red Dead Redemption 2 10 stars 9 stars 8 stars 7 stars 6 stars 5 stars 4 stars 3 stars 2 stars 1 star Like Follow Followed Action Adventure Systems OpenCritic Reviews Top Critic Avg: 95/100 Critics Rec: 94% Released October 26, 2018 ESRB M for Mature: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Nudity, Sexual Content, Strong Language, Use of Drugs and Alcohol Developer Rockstar Games Publisher Rockstar Games Engine RAGE Multiplayer Online Multiplayer Cross-Platform Play N/A Cross Save N/A Franchise Red Dead Redemption
