F1: Red Bull's Max Verstappen has claimed a wet and wild Canadian Grand Prix, as Australian Daniel Ricciardo was in the points after a rare false start.
F1’s annual weekend at the Circuit de Barcelona -Catalunya is rarely held in such high regard. Its years of service as a test venue sucked some of the life from the track, with cars inevitably lapping in order of pure pace and with little jeopardy to spice up the action.New to Kayo? It’s a lose-lose situation for Red Bull Racing, and the last four circuits have all challenged cars with high kerbs. On paper it features everything that makes the car great. It has a wide range of corner speeds, which tests a car’s aerodynamic efficiency, and there’s no real requirement for a driver to really attack the kerbs, which anyway are flatter and friendlier to a stiff car in Spain. And the surface itself is billiard-table smooth.
Adding to the uncertainty is that Ferrari is rumoured to be bringing a significant upgrade to this race. McLaren has also said it’ll be bringing new parts, and though it’s warned not to expect a major package, it’s admitted it’s been surprised by how much its Miami-spec update has improved the car in ways it didn’t expect.
Of course we’ve been here before with Mercedes. The team has won a race and taken poles already in the ground-effect era, but it’s never amounted to anything sustainable, with the team inevitably slumping back to the lower points-paying places and occasionally worse. If the German marque can challenge for the podium in Spain, Brackley will be entitled to feel optimistic that it really is back on the right track after more than two years of painful toil. While the Spanish Grand Prix is likely to feature many high-profile upgrades, keeping a markedly lower profile is Adrian Newey, the man who bears so much responsibility for the development direction of these ground-effect cars.
Aston is rumoured to also be pursuing Ferrari head of chassis Enrico Cardile, who might be motivated to leave if a man of Newey’s stature suddenly appeared above him in the hierarchy. Ferrari is reportedly wary of putting pen to paper with the Briton precisely because of the risk his arrival destabilises the team just as it seems to be finding a lucrative groove,
There are clear arguments for and against each. Audi offers the lucrative backing of one of world motorsport’s most successful brands but will be starting from Sauber’s rock-bottom base. Williams is on a clearly positive trajectory but is less clear of a long-term bet.“I don’t want to wait any longer, as it is taking space out of my head,” he said in Barcelona. “So soon we will have things to talk about.”“I’m still not sure one way or another.
But once Sainz does make his decision — perhaps as early as next week, depending on when he makes some time for “a couple of days at home” — the rest of the market is expected to click into place rapidly.
