The U.S. Commerce Department is reviewing public comments on its proposal to impose export controls on emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, robotics and biotechnology. If the proposal is adopted, the government could prohibit exports of certain products to buyers from China and elsewhere.

Chinese electric-car maker Nio doubled its office space in San Jose in 2018 and now employs about 600 people in the area. It opened its southern California office in 2016.
