One of the first craft cannabis growers approved by state regulators under the social equity program is close to starting operations.

Rick Ringold, one of the majority owners of Galaxy Labs, points out features of a cannabis growing room Friday at the Richton Park facility.

The program was intended to offer disadvantaged people and communities of color disproportionately affected by the war on drugs an opportunity to benefit from the cannabis industry. A neighbor of the couple learned they were looking for space, and he owns the retail center where Galaxy has set up shop.Jose Maldonado, a business owner and investor in Galaxy, grew up in the Chicago Housing Authority’s Trumbull Park project in the South Deering community.“Our neighborhood was surrounded by drugs and gangs but I was fortunate to escape the effects,” he said in a news release from Galaxy.

The couple reached out to family and friends as well as a private lender that caters to firms in the recreational cannabis arena, she said.
