A record-breaking $1.4 billion Powerball jackpot is up for grabs Wednesday night following weeks of drawings without a grand prize winner. The numbers drawn on September 3rd were 3, 16, 29, 61, 69, and the red Powerball 22. The Power Play multiplier was 2x. This jackpot ranks among the largest in Powerball history, a result of a streak of rollovers spanning the summer. The massive Powerball prize is the sixth-largest U.S. lottery jackpot.
It's the culmination of 40 consecutive drawings throughout the summer with no one matching all six numbers in the game.No one has claimed the grand prize since May 31st, and Wednesday's 41st drawing will be just one fewer than the record set last year. All of these near misses stem from Powerball's extremely low odds of 1 in 292.2 million. Lottery officials emphasize, however, that the odds are significantly better for winning the game's numerous smaller prizes. There are three drawings each week.The $1.4 billion jackpot is structured as an annuity, paid out in 30 installments over 29 years. However, winners overwhelmingly choose the cash option, which for this drawing would be an estimated $634.3 million. Powerball tickets cost $2 and are sold in 45 states, along with Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands
