The U.S. State Department has issued travel alerts for two Central American countries.
However, while Costa Rica’s travel alert is a Level 2 — under which travelers are urged to “Exercise Increased Caution” — the one for Honduras has been increased to a Level 3, “Reconsider Travel”.
“Local authorities may lack sufficient resources to respond effectively to serious crime incidents. Around resort areas in the Bay Islands, which include Roatan, Utila, and Guanaja, there is a concentration of resources, and these areas are better policed.” With regards to Costa Rica, the department notes that “Petty crime is common throughout the country.”
