Oftentimes, Taft football head coach Fred Emmerson will motivate Lior Leshem with a familiar notion.Leshem’s heard messages similar to the first part of Emmerson’s for some time. It was apparent to the wide receiver at a young age that if he wanted to excel at one of the few positions in football catered to his body type without the natural athleticism and height that other receivers possess, he’d have to perfect his route running.
Taft enters West Valley League play Friday with a game against Cleveland , whose secondary, led by Kory Hall, will present Leshem and the Toreadors’ offense with one of their greatest challenges this season.Most who have aspirations of playing at the next level are. His father held him to a high standard and always told him that “if he wasn’t going to be the best in at least one thing, he’d never make it.”It’s helped to make Taft’s offensive attack effective. Under Emmerson, the Toreadors run a pass-first offense with a heavy dose of option routes. It’s predicated on timing, something Leshem and quarterback Devon Conroy have worked on together since they were young.
Leshem’s ability to notice tendencies like that comes from years of repetition while playing flag football and running routes on Sundays against his siblings and older cousins. This past offseason was especially vital. After breaking his collarbone last season, his senior year acts as a chance to prove that he’s that Division I talent Emmerson says he is.
