This involved pouring tens of billions of dollars into the industry and employing predatory pricing tactics that American drone companies simply could not compete with. This resulted in the weakening of American supply chains, leading to a negative feedback loop that reduced the availability of US-made drones and inflated their prices, making them prohibitively expensive for both military and commercial applications. Recognizing this critical shortfall, the United States is taking decisive steps. The present administration is now prepared to rebuild its small drone industry through a combined approach of strategic investment and targeted industrial policy. First, Republicans in Congress, collaborating with the Trump administration, allocated $2.5 billion in the defense reconciliation bill to enable the Pentagon to procure small drones. This represents a significant increase compared to prior spending on the technology, which rarely exceeded $100 million annually. In response, Congress initiated a national security review of key Chinese drone manufacturers. This legislation, spearheaded by Senator Rick Scott and supported by the Senate Armed Services Committee, aims to ban the sale of adversary-made components within the United States. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is actively implementing this legislation, and just before Christmas, it announced a ban on the future sale of foreign-made drones and drone components in America. The FCC and the Pentagon are working together to grant waivers to key allies in Asia and Europe, acknowledging their critical role in the drone supply chain.
