Stewart Halpern has been awarded a new term as the City Council seeks an outside legal opinion.
Halpern took public exception to that pushback. “The city attorney’s response is inaccurate, absurd and baseless,” he said at the time.Last April, “this office’s chief of ethics and compliance informed Mr. Halpern that he has an impermissible conflict of interest and requested that he immediately resolve the conflict,” she wrote to the council ahead of the meeting.
Audit committee member Toufic Tabshouri also testified before the council, saying the city attorney was challenging Halpern — and himself — for personal reasons.Request comes as Moreno, other committee members review audit of the city’s recent real estate deals “This is retaliation because Mr. Halpern has challenged the city attorney’s opinion on the city auditor’s need for an independent legal counsel,” she said. “If we go along today not bringing forward a reappointment for Mr. Halpern to the audit committee, we are complicit in that retaliation.”
