An analysis of reader responses to a recent column advocating for education reform in Texas.

Readers agree with the column that offers five strategies for improving education; support Medicaid expansion in Texas ; appreciate hospice care; warn against surprises from China; and pay tribute to Jimmy Carter. Contributing columnist William McKenzie says there are five education initiatives the Texas Legislature should focus on this session. A reader says education is the most important.

Re: “Getting fundamentals right for Texas education — Here are 5 back-to-basics strategies for the ‘25 Legislature,” by William McKenzie, Sunday Opinion. Thank you for this excellent column on the need to focus on education basics in Texas. Texas claims to be a business-friendly state. To truly achieve that aspiration, we need a well-educated workforce. However, it’s well known that we are not reaching that goal and instead we are importing highly educated workers from other states and other countries (H-1B visas). The minimal investment into public education by such a wealthy state as Texas is foolish and short-sighted. Our Legislature really needs to turn it around for Texas to reach its true potential. Focusing on (and funding) McKenzie’s five education fundamentals would do the trick. Republicans and Democrats should get behind Senate Bill 232, proposed for the third time by Sen. Nathan Johnson. If Texas expands Medicaid, it is a win-win with billions of dollars in federal incentives available. It is free and available now. Other conservative states have done this with success. The mindset for conservatives is often that people on Medicaid are “less than” and unwilling to work. I am a conservative Republican, but I say, get over yourselves with this high and mighty attitude. With inflation and the struggle people are having financially, and the need for health care in general, Johnson is correct: “There is no scenario in which this is not a good idea.” I would like to commend Sara Bailey for her enlightening letter concerning hospice care
