For 66 years, Taco House has been a staple at 581 South Federal Boulevard, with a sign that's almost bigger than the building below it, beckoning hungry diners looking for a cheap Mexican food fix. Gerald Bevelhymer opened the place in 1958, and it's still run by the same family. For now: On December 1,"Our grandfather's vision was to operate an affordable Mexican food restaurant, offering one of the first carry-out options in Denver," reads the closure announcement.
There's also a Taco House in Littleton; it's under separate ownership, but notes:"We’re all in the same boat and why I always insist that we support local small businesses. We have a meeting at the end of the month to figure everything out."I ate there almost every Friday night as a kid. The Dinner #4 was $1.25 for three cheese enchiladas and three tostadas - guacamole, bean, queso. They had the hot sauce in small jars and it was GOOD!I still go to the one in Littleton.
