One of four schools still in the race for a $5,000 library makeover will be recognized as the champ April 4.
As the NCAA Final Four tournament gets under way this week, a fiercely competitive reading competition among local third-graders is already down to its own formidable foursome of schools. The remaining campuses still standing in a March Madness hunt for a $5,000 library upgrade are Burke Elementary , Northside Independent School District ; Freedom Elementary , Southside ISD; Harmony School of Science, a charter school; and Royal Ridge Elementary , North East ISD.
Express-News Education home page Students from the four top-performing schools will be spotlighted in a special recognition at the Read to the Final Four Celebration on April 4, during the Final Four Fan Fest at the Convention Center downtown. A tally of minutes read will be announced and a champion will be crowned. Herff Elementary School in Boerne ISD won the last San Antonio competition in 2021 with more than 5,500 reading minutes per student.
South San adopts controversial Bible-infused instruction The winning school board member will receive complimentary tickets to the April 5-7 tournament. Blount, who serves as board president at Northside, organized the trustee competition as a means of modeling the importance of youth literacy. He said he hopes future Final Four host cities initiate a similar contest among school officials to mirror Read to the Final Four, which began in Houston in 2016.
