Reactionary conservatives won against diversity at Texas A&M | Opinion
In that environment, perhaps it should not be surprising that the ambitious GOP governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, is promoting new high school history standards that teachfor some Black people because they were taught skills. It certainly shouldn’t be surprising that the proposed hiring of a Black professor who supports diversity would stir a ruckus. After all, Texas, like several other GOP-led states, has passed a law that bans offices, programs and training that promote diversity.
McElroy has certainly encouraged hiring practices that promote diversity in newsrooms, but that’s been commonplace in the news business since the 1960s. Even white industry executives have long understood that they couldn’t cover a racially and ethnically diverse nation appropriately with an overwhelmingly white newsroom.
Hart Blanton, head of Texas A&M’s Department of Communication and Journalism, told the Texas Tribune thatin the uproar over McElroy’s hiring. It’s certainly not that she is unqualified. She has a Ph.D. Having served four years as head of the journalism school at UT, McElroy is a tenured professor there.
