Razer's unique Zephyr face mask, featuring RGB lighting and air purification technology, is finally available for purchase. Learn about its features, pricing, and potential benefits.

Razer 's Zephyr face mask is finally available to the public after months of refining its features and conducting beta tests with loyal Razer fans. Starting tonight at 11PM ET / 8PM PT, you can purchase it directly from Razer .com in two different configurations. The base kit priced at $99.99 includes the mask, a carrying pouch, a USB-C charging cable, anti-fog spray, and three sets of replaceable N95 filters, offering nine days of usage. For those who desire a longer supply of filters, a $149.

99 version encompasses everything mentioned above, plus 33 sets of filters, extending the filtered use to 99 days. Individual filter sets containing 10 filters are also available for purchase at $29.99, providing 30 days of filtered air. The Zephyr represents a significant departure for Razer, a company renowned for its gaming accessories and PC components, venturing into the realm of health and wellness. While still maintaining its signature RGB flair, the Zephyr aims to enhance people's well-being. Its unveiling at CES 2021 generated a mixed response, with some perceiving it as a strategic move to capitalize on the global pandemic. Razer faced initial skepticism due to its lack of certification regarding the mask's safety and effectiveness during a pandemic, a situation that persists. The Zephyr, while FDA-registered, lacks specific medical device or personal protective equipment (PPE) approval. It hasn't undergone testing against COVID-19, and the company hasn't disclosed plans for seeking further authorization. Currently, it's marketed as an air purifier, boasting N95-grade filters with a claimed 99 percent bacteria filtration efficiency (BFE). Razer asserts that the mask filters 99 percent of air particles measuring 0.3 microns in size, both when inhaled and exhaled. However, the efficacy against COVID-19 particles, which are smaller than 0.3 microns but typically bound to larger molecules, remains less clear.Replacing the filters is a straightforward process. Simply remove the magnetically attached caps on the two air valves and insert a filter, aligning the black section towards the mask. An additional filter is placed beneath the transparent plastic window covering the mouth. Each set of N95-grade filters can be used for up to 72 hours before their filtration capabilities diminish. Razer advises replacing the filters promptly if prolonged exposure occurs in high-risk environments, such as indoor locations. The Zephyr boasts a distinctive aesthetic and features seldom encountered in conventional face masks. It resembles a futuristic gas mask, with Razer's Chroma RGB lighting adorning the edges of the air intake and exhaust valves, where the N95 filters are installed. While the LEDs primarily serve a decorative purpose, they are also marketed as an accessibility feature. Their integration with the see-through window covering the mouth could theoretically facilitate lip-reading and enhance the perception of non-verbal cues often obscured by masks. To address concerns about airflow, the Zephyr incorporates fans near the filters, designed to ease breathing. A button on the mask allows users to activate the fans and select from two speeds: 4200 and 6200 revolutions per minute. A third air chamber situated near the bottom of the mouth area operates passively without a fan.The Zephyr features a dual strap design intended to accommodate all head sizes. One strap encircles the neck, while the other, equipped with a fastening mechanism, secures around the back of the head. Both straps, along with the components that contact the nose and chin, utilize silicone. The silicone parts facing the user's skin are detachable for easy cleaning. However, Razer cautions against wiping the inner surface of the plastic window, as it may compromise the anti-fog coating that enhances visibility of the mouth.Initially, Razer promised to include amplifiers and speakers in the Zephyr to amplify the wearer's voice. However, this feature was unfortunately omitted from the first-generation product. According to Razer, eliminating this component resulted in weight reduction, larger air valves, and an extended battery life. Nevertheless, the company hasn't ruled out the possibility of incorporating this feature in future Zephyr iterations. This omission disappointed some potential users, such as my partner, a teacher, who envisioned the voice amplification feature as a significant benefit during classroom instruction, eliminating the need to strain their voice while wearing a mask
