Grand Canyon needed all 38 of Ray Harrison's points to survive Utah Tech in a WAC men's basketball game.
Ray Harrison had 38 points, all of which were needed for Grand Canyon to hang on to beat Utah Tech 89-85 Wednesday night in a Western Athletic Conference men's basketball game before 6,041 fans at GCU Arena.
Utah Tech trailed by nine three times in the last 5 minutes, but kept coming back with Isaiah Pope and Frank Staine making tough shots and the Lopes turning the ball three straight times in the Trailblazers' press. That sequence enabled Utah Tech to go from an 85-76 deficit to 85-83 with 27 second left on Staine's steal and layup.
This time GCU was able to inbound it and Gabe McGlothan knocked down two free throws for an 87-83 lead. Another basket by Pope made it 87-85, but Harrison was fouled and he hit both free throws to ice it.Harrison made 7 of 9 3-point attempts, 13 of 19 field goals and 5 of 7 free throws for his 38 points, which ties Mike Finke for second-most by a GCU player in its NCAA Division I era.McGlothan was 6 of 6 from the free-throw line. He had 15 points.
Utah Tech center Tanner Christensen had 16 of his 21 points in the first half, but he made only 3 of 8 free throws.Harrison and Baker both hit 3-pointers in the first three minutes of the second half. Harrison then drove in for a basket and Baker converted two free throws to give GCU a 51-43 lead in the first four kminutes of the half.
