Thames Water agreed for HS2 to begin sending wastewater for treatment at the Maple Lodge sewage treatment plant in Hertfordshire from August 2021. They then agreed to increase the maximum amount permitted by 50 per cent in April last year.
“When I heard that it had been agreed, I said: ‘Who in their right minds has countenanced approving this?’ You’re approving effluent going into an already failing sewage treatment works? That’s got to be wrong,” Paul Jennings, chairman of the River Chess Association, a local campaigning group, toldi Thames Water signed up to take waste water from a site known as South Portal, just inside the M25 in south-west Hertfordshire, where HS2 is boring a major tunnel beneath the Chiltern Hills.
