Residents say they are plagued by vermin a year after a butcher shop was gutted by fire closing it and a neighbouring branch of Boots, where they say rats have been seen eating their way through stock.
Exterminators have been called in after images emerged a year on from a fire that gutted a Lanarkshire butcher shop and and left three people in hospital. Residents and business owners say they have been left inundated with vermin.
The butchers and a neighbouring Boots chemist have not reopened since the blaze in August last year and it is claimed rats have been seen tearing their way through products, including baby formula. Residents have also told how they have been left terrified by the creatures inside their homes. South Lanarkshire Council have called in experts to put down bait and are awaiting results. One local in the town's Green Street said: "It's an absolute nightmare and we're being overrun by rats."The fire happened a year ago but the shops have not been touched and this is what we've been left with."I was walking past and saw one at the window, I then looked in further and counted five of them eating out of a tub of baby formula.
"Some domestic properties have also reported signs of rodent activity, and we have encouraged them to arrange pest control within their own property."Sign up to our daily Glasgow Live newsletter here to receive news and features direct to your inbox
