Barzini's on the Upper West Side, famous for its appearance in 'Sex and the City', was ordered to temporarily close after inspectors discovered unsanitary conditions, including rats and expired food. Despite the court order, the store reopened on Saturday, angering customers and raising concerns about the store's commitment to hygiene.
The manager of Barzini's on the Upper West Side was seen cleaning up on Monday, just a day after a judge ordered the store to temporarily shut down. The closure came following an inspection that revealed a number of unsanitary conditions , including living and dead rats, moldy cheese, expired food, and more. On January 15th, a judge instructed the store to close and rectify the problems.
However, on Saturday, customers were spotted inside, raising concerns about the store's adherence to the court order. This issue came to light after customers contacted City Council Member Gale Brewer, expressing their dismay at the presence of rodents within the establishment. Council Member Brewer stated, 'The court judge indicated that he wasn't ordering a padlock at this point. The honor system of the worst kind...it should have been padlocked.' On Monday, the only activity inside the store involved workers discarding food and a solitary rat searching for its next meal. One customer commented, 'I have sympathy for the owners, but they have to keep it clean.' Eyewitness News reached out to the state authorities but has yet to receive a response. A hearing is scheduled for Friday, but a customer reported that the manager informed her of plans to reopen on Tuesday. Janice Yu has more details on the measures taken to prevent access to the renowned Sex and the City stoop. Do you have a breaking news tip or an idea for a story we should cover?
