A powerful winter storm is expected to bring a significant amount of snow, sleet, and freezing rain to the Deep South, causing widespread disruptions and potentially threatening lives and infrastructure. Millions are urged to prepare for hazardous conditions and potential power outages.
A rare winter storm is set to bring heavy snow, sleet, and freezing rain to the Deep South , plunging much of the eastern U.S. into a deep freeze. Millions of people from Texas to north Florida are bracing for the impact, rushing to prepare for the onslaught of winter weather. The storm is expected to impact Texas starting Monday evening, spread eastward through Wednesday morning, with heavy snow anticipated along and to the north of the Interstate 10 corridor.
Sleet and freezing rain are forecast for south Texas, southeast Georgia, and northern Florida. Forecasters warn that sub-freezing morning lows could threaten sensitive vegetation and exposed plumbing in areas unaccustomed to such frigid temperatures. Across Louisiana, officials urge residents to 'stay home' and avoid 'sightseeing' during the storm, warning that any road ice could make travel treacherous. Warming centers are being prepared to assist the homeless population. The weather service cautions that power outages are possible in areas experiencing significant snow and ice accumulation. A state of emergency has been declared in at least a dozen New York counties due to heavy lake-effect snow expected around Lake Ontario and Lake Erie through Wednesday, with 1 to 2 feet of snow anticipated, alongside extreme cold temperatures. Governors in Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama have declared states of emergency, and numerous school systems have canceled classes Tuesday. Meanwhile, the East Coast is battling a thick blanket of snow, with people from the Northern Plains to the tip of Maine shivering in bitterly cold temperatures caused by the frigid arctic air mass. Dangerously cold wind chills are expected to persist through Tuesday morning. Around 40 million people, primarily across the southern U.S. from Texas to Florida, are under some type of weather hazard, including over 21 million under a winter storm warning. Approximately 170 million people from the Rockies to the east coast are under either an extreme warning or a cold weather advisory. FlightAware reports nearly 600 flight cancellations by Monday evening within the U.S. or entering or leaving the country, along with nearly 6,500 delays. Over 1,700 cancellations are also scheduled for Tuesday. This latest cold snap stems from a disruption in the polar vortex, the ring of cold air usually confined around the North Pole. This unusual weather pattern also poses a threat to sensitive infrastructure and crops, highlighting the significant impact these extreme weather events can have on daily life
