Montana-based photographer Erin Braaten discovered the calf shortly after it was born on June 4 in the Lamar Valley, with the snaps showing the small animal taking her first steps beside her dark-brown family.
When the spirit left, she transformed into a white buffalo, telling the trip that when times are hard again, she “shall return and stand upon the earth as a white buffalo calf, black nose, black eyes, black hooves,” Horse said. Native American leaders in the region said that a ceremony will be held on June 26 at the Buffalo Field Campaign headquarters, in West Yellowstone, to celebrate the calf’s birth.
