Birdwatchers on a pier near Cleveland Metroparks’ Villa Angela Beach on Saturday morning, after dozens of sighting of the rare-to-Ohio Heermann’s gull were reported there in recent days.CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Birdwatchers flocked to Euclid Beach Park early Saturday afternoon to catch a rare glimpse of a Pacific-based gull not known to frequent Cleveland’s freshwater coast.

About two dozen keen observers seemed to be searching for the Heermann’s gull along the Metroparks’ Euclid Creek Reservation on the shores of Lake Erie. Armed with a camera and what appeared to be heavy-duty binoculars, one birdwatching duo said they had traveled from Columbus in hopes of spotting the gull, defined by its distinctive red bill, white head and dark-gray plumage.“Cuyahoga County Rare Bird Alert” page since June 24. The sightings were along the waterfront at Euclid Beach Park and Villa Angela Beach in Cleveland’s North Collinwood neighborhood.

The bird is a shockingly rare find for Northeast Ohio and much of the United States, the Columbus birdwatcher said. But it isn’t the gull’s only recent appearance on Lake Erie. The Heermann’s gull drew attention in Lorain back in late April. Sightings were reported at the Lorain Impoundment and Lorain Hot Waters,
