The bracted twistflower, which is at risk from urban sprawl in major Texas cities, was recently declared a threatened species by the federal service.
The plant likely depends on either the subsurface water or magnesium, or both, found in this geographic zone — parts of which will be protected under the ruling.
“There’s more, and they need more to eat,” he said. “And some of what they end up eating are the bracted twistflower.” “Genetic isolation can lead, over many generations of a plant, to losses in genetic diversity and that can make it less able to adapt in a myriad of ways,” he said.The wildflower also plays an important role in the ecosystem by supplying nectar to pollinating insects such as bees, Robinson said.
