A Kemp's ridley sea turtle laid 81 eggs at Padre Island National Seashore. It's the world's smallest species of sea turtle and is listed as endangered.
A Kemp's ridley sea turtle has laid the endangered species' first nest of the season at Padre Island National Seashore . The turtle laid 81 eggs on the beach last week, the National Seashore said. The eggs were collected by biologists and relocated to be incubated in a protected environment. Once they hatch in 42 to 56 days, the baby turtles will be released into the Gulf of Mexico.
Future & Metro Boomin, Shakira announce San Antonio concert dates According to the National Park Service, Kemp's ridley sea turtles nest in Texas from April through mid-July, but nests have been found in Mexico from March through August. The turtles typically lay their nests during the day. When the turtles nest, they crawl onto the beach, dig a hole with their flippers, lay their eggs, cover the eggs and return to the sea. The turtle does not care for the eggs.
