One of American artist Jackson Pollock’s signature “drip” paintings is poised to rank among Pollock’s most expensive works, after it returns to auction next month for the first time in decades.
is expected to fetch more than $45 million at Christie’s 20th Century Evening Sale auction on May 12 after remaining in the same private collection for more than 20 years, according to the auction house.Artnet“Number 31” has appeared in major Pollock exhibitions, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York’s 1967 show and a 1998 retrospective that ran both at MoMA and at Tate Modern in London.
Pollock painted “Number 31” in 1949, the same year his art career took off after he mastered the “drip painting” process, in which he poured paint directly from a can onto a canvas set down horizontally on the floor, sometimes using a stick to push and blend pigments.
